This glass negative is dated February 28, 1924, but its record gives only a catalog number, 45350, as its title, and the subject is not named. The National Photo Company made a large body of photographs in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, documenting the city's streets, buildings, and public life, and the company's glass plates were its main working medium. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947. Streaks and blemishes on the surface come from the natural breakdown of the original emulsion, a common condition in glass plates of this age.
