Rappahannock Station, the Virginia crossing named in this drawing's notes, was the site of a Union victory in November 1863, and by March 1864 the surrounding countryside still bore the marks of the Army of the Potomac's winter camps. The pencil drawing, dated March 14, 1864, is titled *News from the front*, a phrase that speaks to the long waits for letters, dispatches and rumors that connected soldiers with the people at home. The record does not name the artist, but the work is a modest example of how wartime sketches recorded everyday anxieties alongside the fighting. It came to the Library of Congress as a gift.
