Drawn in pencil and dated March 12, 1864, this sketch is labeled as made at Rappahannock Station in Virginia, where Union and Confederate troops fought a sharp engagement in November 1863. Its title, *Reading the News, Off Duty*, points to a quieter side of army life, when men gathered to catch up on newspapers from home between drills and picket duty. The artist signed only with the initials E.F. The Library of Congress received the drawing as a gift in 1919, and it now belongs to its Civil War drawing collection. Scenes like this help historians see how soldiers spent the hours between marches and battles.
