*Reveries* is a hand-colored poster from about 1910 that links cigar smoking with the drifting, half-awake pleasure of daydreaming, a theme well suited to tobacco advertising of the period. Printed posters like this were a major advertising medium in the early 1900s, when companies competed for attention on streetcars, in shop windows and on billboards. The record notes that it was copyrighted by the S & S System of Chicago, which shows the maker sought legal protection for the design. Its subjects, smoking, cigars and dreaming, make the poster a useful example of how advertisers sold leisure to men.
