The title Thanksgiving, 1919 is the main clue to this glass negative, though the National Photo Company's label on it is unverified, so the scene is best read as a holiday occasion that year. The studio worked in Washington, D.C., recording streets, public events and everyday life in the early twentieth century, and this plate came to the Library of Congress as a gift from Herbert A. French in 1947. Streaks and blemishes across the glass come from deterioration of its original coatings, and they are part of what the plate looks like today.
