Here we see a group of people in costume, their faces hidden behind masks, posed for the camera as part of a Thanksgiving celebration. The image comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a large body of glass negatives made by the Bain News Service, a photo agency that supplied pictures to newspapers in New York and elsewhere in the early twentieth century. Masquerading was a common part of holiday festivities in that era, and the agency's files were built around news and feature subjects like these. The title comes from caption information the agency wrote on the negatives, which was not independently verified, so the exact occasion and the identities of the maskers remain uncertain.
