Few details survive about this glass negative beyond its title, "Thanksgiving Maskers," and its place in the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress. Bain News Service, the Manhattan-based photo agency Bain ran from the early 1900s, produced and sold images like this one to newspapers, so the picture was made for quick editorial use. Masquerading was a long-standing part of holiday celebrations in parts of the United States, with people in costume going door to door or joining parades and parties. The negative's record notes that the title comes from unverified agency information, so the subject is best read as a likely scene rather than a confirmed one.
