Thanksgiving Maskers is a small glass negative from the George Grantham Bain Collection at the Library of Congress, a body of work produced by the Bain News Service, a Manhattan picture agency that sold photographs to newspapers in the early twentieth century. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the costumed figures and their exact occasion cannot be confirmed from the record alone. Still, the picture belongs to a long American tradition of holiday masquerades, when costumed revelers, often children and young adults, went door to door or joined parades in late autumn. Glass negatives like this one preserve fine detail that later prints from them can reproduce.
