The title on this glass negative comes from unverified notes the National Photo Company wrote on the plate or its sleeve, so the exact occasion is uncertain. The studio, based in Washington, D.C., made many pictures of the city and its people, and this plate reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1947. Thanksgiving in 1919 fell in the first full autumn after the Armistice ended World War I, a holiday that many Americans observed with a mix of relief and family gatherings. Glass negatives of this age often show streaks and surface blemishes from the breakdown of their coatings, which may be visible here.
