A lifeboat crowded with sailors and other figures fills the foreground, while one man gestures toward a submarine looming in the background, a menacing detail that frames the scene as a moment of danger at sea. Artist Frank Brangwyn, an Associate of the Royal Academy, made the design as a color lithograph, and the London firm Avenue Press printed it in 1917 for the U.S. Navy Recruiting Bureau. That was the year the United States entered the First World War, and recruiting posters of the period often mixed heroism with the dangers of naval service. The image shows how war art drew on the rescue at sea to stir up a sense of duty among potential enlistees.
