A demonstration at a fireman's school focuses on the magneto, the small generator that produced the electrical spark firing an engine's cylinders. Magnetos spread in gasoline engines in the early 1900s, and as motorized apparatus replaced horse-drawn pumpers in American cities, departments had to train their men to keep these engines running. The picture belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, made by a New York news photo service that sold pictures to newspapers. The record gives no date, so the year of the lesson is uncertain.
