The title's commands, "take up" and "man your rope," point to the moment after a blaze, when firemen have reached the smoldering ruins and must haul their gear out. Louis Maurer, a German-born artist who drew many of Currier & Ives's firefighting scenes, made this chromolithograph around 1854, when volunteer fire companies were a visible part of street life in New York. The series appealed to a middle-class buyer who admired the courage and camaraderie of these crews, and the print shows the rough, physical labor that lay behind that romantic picture.
