Titled "The life of a fireman: the metropolitan system," this hand-colored lithograph takes its name from the paid, centralized fire department that New York adopted in 1865, when it replaced many of its old volunteer companies. Currier & Ives published the print in New York around 1866, and the firm's 115 Nassau Street imprint marks this as the colored version of the design. John Cameron, whose signature appears on the image, drew it for a public following the city's reorganized fire service closely.
