Firefighters racing to a blaze in the 1850s were often volunteers, and this hand-colored lithograph shows the moment the alarm sounds and the crew springs into action. Its title, "The night alarm, start her lively boys," captures the urgency of hauling a hand-pumped engine out of the station in the dark. Louis Maurer, who drew many of the firm's sporting and street scenes, signed the image, and Currier & Ives published it in New York around 1854. The print offers a lively view of how volunteer companies competed for speed and prestige in the years before steam fire engines became common.
