The title, *The Life of a Fireman: The Metropolitan System*, announces its subject, and this hand-colored lithograph by John Cameron was published by Currier & Ives from 115 Nassau Street in New York around 1866. The date places it just after New York's volunteer fire companies were consolidated into the paid Metropolitan Fire Department in 1865, a change that replaced the rival volunteer brigades of earlier decades with a single professional force. Currier & Ives produced many firefighting scenes for a public that followed the city's blazes closely, and this one ties its images of firefighters' daily work to the new system. The Library of Congress also holds a black-and-white impression issued from a different Nassau Street address.
