Firemen practicing a climb up the outside of a building set this picture apart from the many shots of fire engines at work on a blaze. The glass negative comes from the George Grantham Bain Collection, a body of early news photographs made by the Bain News Service. Drills like this trained crews to reach upper-floor windows and rescue people when smoke or flame cut off the stairs, a skill that mattered in crowded city buildings of the period. The title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact building and date remain uncertain.
