Currier & Ives issued this 1858 lithograph, "The American Fireman: Rushing to the Conflict," at a moment when volunteer fire companies were among the most visible and combative civic groups in American cities. The print shows firemen racing a hand-pulled engine through the street, a scene the firm's lithographers rendered for a public that loved the pageantry and rivalry of the volunteer era. Fire companies in New York and other cities often fought each other over turf and status, which gives the title its double edge. Collectors know the image through the Currier & Ives catalog raisonné, where it is recorded as a standard lithograph of the decade.
