Titled "The American Fireman: Prompt to the Rescue," this hand-colored lithograph shows a volunteer crew heading out to a blaze with the hand-pumped engines common before steam fire apparatus. Currier & Ives issued it in New York in 1858 as part of a long series of fire scenes aimed at a broad middle-class market. Volunteer companies of the period were social clubs as much as emergency services, and rival crews often raced one another to fires, so the scene reflects both urgency and local pride. The color was applied by hand after printing, which is why individual impressions vary slightly.
