Few wartime appeals asked civilians for something as humble as rabbit skins. This 1917 German poster, titled "Kanin-Felle abliefern! Das Heer braucht sie!" ("Deliver rabbit skins! The army needs them!"), belongs to the home-front collection drives Germany ran as the Allied blockade cut off imports of wool and other raw materials. Rabbit fur could be processed into felt, and felt was used for military headgear and other equipment, so old pelts from ordinary households could become a useful supply. Campaigns like this one show how the war reached into kitchens and backyards, asking everyday citizens to contribute whatever they had.
