The record gives this glass negative the title "Dempsey & Kearns," dated February 22, 1924, though the cataloguers note that the label information is unverified. If it does refer to the heavyweight boxer Jack Dempsey and his manager Jack "Doc" Kearns, it would capture the pair during the period when Dempsey was the most famous fighter in the country. The National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio known for its news and portrait work, made the negative. Its surface shows streaks and blemishes from the gradual breakdown of the original coating, which is typical of glass plates from this era. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the collection in 1947.
