Powell Clayton is the subject of this glass negative, one of the portraits the Bain News Service made of public figures for its wire photos. Clayton was a Union cavalry officer who rose to brigadier general, then served as Arkansas's first Republican governor during Reconstruction, from 1868 to 1871, and later as a U.S. senator and as ambassador to Mexico. The record gives no date for the exposure, and the name comes from Bain caption data that has not been independently verified, so the portrait's exact occasion is unknown. Its place in the Bain collection, however, shows how news agencies built files of officials for the newspapers of the early twentieth century.
