The title casts James A. Garfield as a farmer mowing a clear path to the White House, a nod to his rural youth in northeastern Ohio, where he worked on the farm and as a canal boy before rising to the presidency. The 1880 Republican convention in Chicago deadlocked for many ballots before delegates turned to him as a compromise candidate, and he defeated Democrat Winfield Scott Hancock that November. Currier & Ives, the New York firm known for its campaign lithographs, turned such biographical details into quick visual messages that voters could take in at a glance.
