Titled *The Lost Bet*, this 1893 color chromolithograph is unusual for placing three men from the 1892 election in one scene: Grover Cleveland, his running mate Adlai E. Stevenson, and Illinois governor John Peter Altgeld. Cleveland won back the presidency that year after losing in 1888, and the print's crowd and rally imagery reflect the mass political spectacle of the period, when campaigns were staged with parades, banners and large gatherings. The lithograph was printed by Jos. Klir in Paris, a reminder that European printers also produced lively, colorful political images for American subjects in the 1890s.
