Printed around 1896 and titled "Protection and sound money," this color halftone pairs William McKinley and Garret A. Hobart, the Republican ticket that year. The slogan named the party's two central planks: high tariffs to protect American manufacturers and a currency backed by gold. The election turned largely on those questions against free silver, the cause championed by Democrat William Jennings Bryan, and McKinley's victory in November set the country on the gold standard. The piece also shows how affordable color halftone reproduction had made candidate portraits a common part of American campaigns.
