Uncle Sam needs money as well as men" is the pitch on this 1917 lithograph, which invites buyers of Liberty Loan bonds to pay in installments through a partial payment plan available at any bank. The United States entered the First World War that spring, and the government relied on bond sales to pay for the war effort, so posters like this one urged ordinary households to lend money to the nation. The payment plan was devised by the Christmas Club, a New York corporation whose savings schemes let people set aside small sums for holiday spending, which explains the poster's place on this board. H.F. Rawll, the artist, copyrighted the design in 1917.
