Neysa McMein's poster singles out one of the thousand Y.M.C.A. women serving in France, presenting her as a figure the public could back at home. It was made for the United War Work Campaign, a joint fundraising drive for several wartime charities that ran November 11 to 18, 1918, the week the Armistice was signed. The Y.M.C.A. sent women workers overseas to staff canteens, recreation rooms and other services for American soldiers, and the poster asks viewers to support that work. Its blend of an appealing portrait and a direct appeal shows how wartime charity was marketed to a broad civilian audience.
