Commissioner of Patents Thomas E. Robertson stands among a crowd of old patent models, the small working replicas that inventors once submitted with their applications. The picture dates to June 19, 1925, and was made by the National Photo Company, a Washington, D.C., studio known for press photographs of government officials and public events. Such models filled the Patent Office's storage for decades, so the scene records both an official and a collection that was then being sorted and reconsidered. Faint streaks and blemishes on the glass negative are typical of the deterioration that affects early photographic coatings.
