Commissioner of Patents Thomas E. Robertson poses among old patent models in this June 1925 view by the National Photo Company. The Patent Office once required inventors to submit working models with many applications, so its storerooms gradually filled with small machines and mechanisms from the nineteenth century. Photographs like this one capture that collection at a time when the old models were a visible part of the agency's past. Streaks and blemishes on the glass negative come from natural deterioration of its original coatings.
