Winfield Scott Hancock, the Union general whose name is lettered beneath this small pencil and watercolor portrait, is the figure the drawing is built around. Hancock commanded the II Corps and was a central figure on the Union line at Gettysburg, where he was wounded on the third day of the battle during Pickett's Charge. The sheet is a field-style sketch on yellow paper, with sketches of trees on the back, a reminder that artists working in the war often drew wherever they could find paper. Its inclusion in the Library of Congress's Civil War drawing collection makes it a record of how the war's leaders were pictured while the fighting was still underway.
