The Wheatfield, a stretch of ripe grain on the Union left-center at Gettysburg, is where the fighting on July 2, 1863 turned into some of the most savage hand-to-hand combat of the battle. Union and Confederate brigades surged back and forth across the field and the rocky ground around it for hours, and the wheat was trampled and bloodied as the lines moved. Whoever made this view, the name of the field alone signals the contrast that visitors and historians often remark on: a peaceful summer crop set against a day of heavy losses.
