Pickett's Charge, the Confederate assault on the Union center along Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863, is the final act of the three-day battle at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Roughly 12,500 Confederate soldiers advanced across open fields under artillery and rifle fire, and the attack collapsed within about an hour, leaving heavy losses on both sides. Pictures of this moment were often made long after the fighting, so it is worth asking how a scene of the clash was composed and what it chose to emphasize. Historians still study the charge as a turning point in the Eastern Theater and a defining moment of the war.
