The first day at Gettysburg, July 1, 1863, opened the largest battle of the American Civil War, fought in and around a small crossroads town in south-central Pennsylvania. Fighting began when Confederate troops under Henry Heth pushed toward the town and ran into Union cavalry under John Buford, who held the ridges west of Gettysburg until infantry arrived. By afternoon the Union line had collapsed north and west of town, and the Confederates drove the defenders back through the streets to the high ground south of town, where the rest of the battle would be decided over the next two days.
