Labeled as the position Hancock's forces occupied on July 2, this stereograph shows ground where Maj. Gen. Winfield Scott Hancock's Second Corps anchored the Union center on Cemetery Ridge in 1863. Made about sixteen years after the battle, it was published by W.H. Tipton & Co. of Gettysburg for visitors who wanted souvenirs of the field. Viewed through a stereoscope, the paired images gave the ridge a sense of depth that made such cards popular. The fighting on that second afternoon was among the battle's bloodiest, and these quiet fields recall it.
