Glass negatives from the Bain News Service, a Manhattan photo agency, record this parade of working horses, which the catalog dates to May 30, 1909. Such events drew draft animals from delivery wagons, streetcar lines, and fire and street departments, and they were often organized by humane societies that wanted to draw attention to the care of hard-worked animals. Bain's photographers covered many such scenes, and the plate offers a close view of the harness, carts, and crowds that made up city street life before motor trucks took over.
