Conrad Espew, listed with the initials G.W., is the name the National Photo Company wrote on the negative or its sleeve, so the identification has not been independently verified. The company worked in Washington, D.C., in the early twentieth century, producing portraits and views on large glass plates, the standard medium before flexible film took over. Herbert A. French gave the negative to the Library of Congress in 1947, and the streaks and blemishes visible on its surface come from the natural deterioration of the original coatings.
