A portrait of Charlotte Elizabeth (Munroe) Putnam, who died in 1928, sets this print apart, and its caption card places the sitting in Annisquam, a village on Cape Ann in Gloucester, Massachusetts. The 1898 date and the photographer's name, given as Carol Norcross with a question mark, come from an old caption card and have not been verified, so treat them as provisional. The print entered the Library of Congress through the Herbert Putnam Collection, named for the man who served as Librarian of Congress from 1899 to 1939, and it reflects the personal portraiture that many families commissioned and kept in the late nineteenth century.
