*El mono azul*, or "The Blue Overall," takes its name from the work clothes of Spain's laborers, and this poster advertises a weekly sheet with that title. It was issued in Madrid by the Alianza de Intelectuales Antifascistas, the antifascist alliance of writers and artists formed during the Spanish Civil War. The paper, edited by Rafael Alberti and María Teresa León, was aimed at Republican militiamen and factory workers, and its title signaled that the publication spoke to ordinary people rather than to the educated elite. Posters like this one carried the Republic's appeals to the front and the home front, and the subject headings here, newspapers and military personnel, reflect that dual purpose.
