Published in the 1872 volume of Harper's New Monthly Magazine, this wood engraving was one of many city views the magazine ran for its readers. Wood engraving was the main way to reproduce drawings in periodicals at the time, with an engraver cutting the design into a block of boxwood for printing. New York was growing fast after the Civil War, and Harper's, a New York publisher, often used such scenes to convey the scale and bustle of city life. Its place in the magazine makes it a useful record of how the city was pictured for national readers.
