The title suggests a Harvard freshman, a first-year student at the university in Cambridge, just across the Charles River from Boston, though the caption data behind it is unverified. The picture survives as a glass negative, the medium the Bain News Service used for much of its work in the early twentieth century, when it supplied photographs of people and events to newspapers across the country.
