Theater lobby is a 1930 drawing of a crowd filling a playhouse foyer, a scene Miguel Covarrubias knew well from his years sketching New York's stage world. The Mexican artist became one of the most recognizable caricaturists of the period, contributing drawings to Vanity Fair, where he turned celebrities, performers and socialites into exaggerated, witty figures. The image is listed among the works in First Night / Entr'acte, a 1985 Smithsonian Institution Press volume by Beverly J. Cox and Denna Jones Anderson that reproduces his caricatures. Look for the long, elastic figures and quick line work that made his style so distinctive.
