Houdini's name and magic show materials fill this 1906 lobby display at the Salem Theater in Salem, Massachusetts, a community that, like many American towns, had a steady stream of touring vaudeville and magic acts. By the mid-1900s, Harry Houdini, born Erik Weisz in Hungary in 1874, was building his reputation as an escape artist and illusionist through touring stage shows and publicity. Lobby displays like this one gave local audiences a preview of the performer and his act before they bought tickets. The two prints are a useful record of how theaters promoted headline acts in the years before film replaced live performance as the main draw.
