Finley Peter Dunne is the subject here, shown in a photographic bust portrait, though the caption card leaves its date unrecorded. Dunne was the Chicago journalist who created Mr. Dooley, a fictional Irish-American bar philosopher whose sharp, colloquial commentary on politics and public life made him one of the most widely read humorists of the early 1900s. Dunne's column pieces were collected in books and reprinted across the country, and his tone of wry skepticism toward the powerful helped shape American newspaper humor for a generation.
