Plate L of Johannes Hevelius's *Cometographia* gathers comets seen between 1577 and 1652 onto one sheet, and its subject headings point to Halley's comet in the early 1600s. Hevelius, an astronomer in Danzig (now Gdańsk), printed the 1668 book on his own press, making it a major seventeenth-century work on comets. Engravings like this one recorded the sky as observers had drawn it, at a time when comets were still widely read as omens. Notice how the plate places many sightings side by side, inviting comparison of their paths across decades.
