Reinhardt is shown seated in a glider set on a track, a staging that reflects how early flight experiments were often run on whatever level ground or rail line was available. The photograph dates to about 1911, when gliders and powered machines were still rough experimental craft and builders tested them close to the ground before attempting free flight. The copyright notice credits Richard J. Montgomery and Frank C. Cleary, which points to the picture having been made for publication or sale rather than as a private record.
