The title names two men, Paul Sorg and E. Fownes, and places them in the driver's seat, a detail that sets this glass negative apart from the many other portraits in the set. The record gives no date, but the Bain News Service, the New York agency whose negatives make up the George Grantham Bain Collection, worked mainly from about 1900 to the 1920s, a period when automobiles were becoming a common subject for news photographers. The title comes from the agency's own caption cards and has not been independently verified, so the identities are best treated as the agency's record rather than settled fact.
