Here the 1940 presidential contest is drawn as a race, with Franklin D. Roosevelt and Republican challenger Wendell Willkie running neck and neck, and the Democratic donkey and Republican elephant among the symbols named in the record. Roosevelt was seeking an unprecedented third term, while Willkie, a utilities executive with no prior government experience, had won his party's nomination that year. The Evening Star ran the cartoon two weeks before the November 5 vote, when the draft that Congress had enacted in September was also a live campaign issue. Though it sits among Theodore Roosevelt pictures, this one concerns Franklin.
