Steam drills working on the Rutland Railroad make this view a record of heavy construction work rather than the passenger trains and depots that fill many railroad photographs. Steam-powered rock drills were used to bore holes for blasting through rock cuts and quarries, and crews relied on them to clear the way for new track. The picture was made on an 8 by 10 inch glass plate by the Detroit Publishing Company, which issued many views of American railroads and scenery in the early 1900s. A crack across the lower left of the glass is still visible, a reminder of how fragile these negatives were.
