The title names a specific spot, "the gut," on the Rutland Railroad, a local term the record does not explain. The Rutland ran mainly through Vermont and into New York, so this crossing likely lies in that region, though the record does not confirm the exact location. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sent photographers across the country around 1900 and sold their views as postcards and travel prints, made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative between about 1900 and 1905. The large format preserves fine detail in the track and surrounding ground, which makes the view worth a close look for anyone studying early rail crossings.
