Does your mother know you're out?" is the playful title on this c1861 color lithograph, which pairs its wording with a scene of birds and farm life. It was printed in Boston by Meisel Bros. for Fisher & Co., a tobacco maker that used eye-catching labels like this to set its packages apart on crowded shop shelves. Lithography made bright color printing affordable in this period, so tobacco makers often commissioned humorous or sentimental scenes that drew buyers' attention. Today these small labels survive mainly in collections, where they show how commercial art of the 1860s blended storytelling with advertising.
