Tecumseh, the Shawnee leader, lived from 1768 to 1813, decades before photography existed, so this hand-colored print must rely on an earlier likeness or an imagined portrait. He organized a broad confederacy of Native nations that resisted American settlement in the Ohio Valley, and he allied with British forces during the War of 1812. He was killed at the Battle of the Thames in 1813. Prints like this one, made between 1860 and 1900, were popular for reproducing historical figures for a late nineteenth-century audience.
